The Rozhen Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God is located 7 km from Melnik and just above Rozhen Village. This is the biggest monastery in Pirin Mountain and one of the few medieval monasteries in Bulgaria which are well preserved. A massive fire in the end of the 17th century destroyed the monastery's archives and did a lot of damages to the buildings. The restoration of the Rozhen Monastery continued until the 18th century with the financial support of wealthy Bulgarians. The monastery turned into a major spiritual center of the region during the 19th century but is in a difficult state again in the beginning of the following century. From the end of the '60s in the 20th century, in the course of 30 years, a team of restorers and iconographers reconstructed the monastery the way it looks today. The grave of the Bulgarian revolutioner Yane Sandanski was found just 200 meters from the Rozhen Monastery. The place was also used for movie scenes. It belongs to the list of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. Although Rozhen Village is very small, it is the closest accommodation location but the options are few. Most of the visitors choose the guest houses and hotels in Melnik. If you stay in Sandanski, a one-day trip to the Rozhen Monastery is a great idea.
